טברנק [Tabarnak] - שרים טברנק Album Review

Updated: Jan 23, 2020

I will start off by saying I have zero comprehension of Hebrew, so if there is anything special lyrically on this album it completely went over my head. While I could not understand what was being said, as an English speaker I felt that the Hebrew language works well with this genre as it has a more tough sound to it, like many Eastern European languages (e.g. Russian).

The album has a 31-minute runtime, split between 18 tracks. Each song is under two and a half minutes long, with just a third of them hitting the two-minute mark. It is a barrage of tracks that get straight to the point and waste no time accomplishing what they set out to do.

While a lot of what you expect to find in a punk rock release can be found here, it is not just a pure head bangin’, foot stompin’ show. The catchy tunes with sing along-able choruses are abundant (notably track 13, ‘ישי אל תלך’) and you can even find straight up metal guitar licks scattered about, especially in the ninth track ‘עקום בפנים’. There is a diversity of sound within this record, which keeps the album sounding fresh, and at least kept me intrigued as I was never quite sure what to anticipate when a new track started.

This album was my introduction to the Israeli punk rock scene, and it certainly made a good first impression. Although I do not want to make a comparison to PUP, this is another piece of pop punk that I am not afraid to admit I enjoyed.

Favourite Tracks: עקום בפנים, שאריות של אשליות, ישי אל תלך, מדינה מחלה, אי אפשר לשכוח
